Hermit Cookies

Yield: approximately 4 dozen

  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softenend
  • 1-1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
  • 3 large eggs
  • tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
  • 2/3 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375F

Soak raisins and dates in separate bowls in warm water.

Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla; beat until smooth.

In a separate bowl, combine next 7 ingredients and add to margarine mixture in 3 additions, mixing well after each addition until no dry flour remains.

Add remaining raisins and dates, squeezing excess water from them beforehand. Add walnuts. Drop tablespoon sized onto greased cookie sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes, until golden brown.
